Spruce ~ The Online Dermatologist

A few weeks ago, out of thin air, my skin started breaking out. I freaked out because a. no one wants gross bumps creeping up under their skin (ew) and b. I had no idea what was causing it. Same skin care routine, same diet, same everything. WHAT!! How is this possible?

To make things even worse, I couldn’t get an appointment to see my dermatologist for a whole week. Seven more days with my skin looking like a pre-pubescent teenage girl with braces and side bangs? Um, no thanks. Side note- exaggeration my skin did not look nearly as bad as that. But regardless, to me it was an issue and I needed to find a solution.

Here’s where Spruce comes in, and saves my skin’s life. So I was doing some frantic internet searching in pursuit of a fast cure. I came across Spruce, which is a virtual dermatologist. This (**first visit free**) app allows you to connect with professional dermatologists without moving an inch from your couch. No joke, my beauty hitch was solved in about one hour and I seriously didn’t even leave my couch, or the Kardashians marathon, for that matter. After entering in standard medical information and answering general questions, I was asked to send pictures of my symptoms and wherever the acne-prone areas occur.

Within 24 hours you are guaranteed to get a personalized treatment plan with detailed and easy-to-follow instructions and even prescriptions sent digitally to your local pharmacy. When they say 24 hours, they’re just being modest. I received my diagnosis and prescription in less than one hour! Crazy!

But the mastermind doesn’t stop here. After your first free “visit”, you are able to ask any questions and you will receive personal responses, prescription refills and follow-up visits with your personal doctor, and it’s possible to share your Spruce care record with your primary care physician.

My skin is proof that this app is pure genius and the dermatologists actually know what they’re talking about. After about one week of using the two creams that I was prescribed, my skin magically cleared up! I still use the two products religiously, and am almost ready for my first re-fill! Actually I am such an advocate for this app that my friends wouldn’t hear the last of it. It was a running commentary of every step of my first-visit, my life-altering experience. Hands down, best doctors visit I’ve ever had!

The Wonders of Vaseline

One simple drug store product that I always have around is Vaseline. I started off using it simply as a lip moisturizer, to cure the dry/cracked lip syndrome that we all get when the colder months roll around. But, over the years I have started to use it for SO much more than that. What’s funny is that I created my own uses for it, but when I looked it up online, it seems that many people have had the same ideas as me. Who ever invented this gooey jelly-like paste is seriously a beauty genius. I’ve decided that I’m going to share with you guys some of the amazing hidden secrets I’ve found of this product.

  1. The obvious— it’s great for moisturizing chapped lips. But, who said you only had to limit it to your lips?! Vaseline works great for any dry spots or cracked skin.
  2. As I mentioned in an earlier post, you can create your own personal shades of blush, shadows, and lip balms by mixing it with powder.
  3. Before bed, I often rub it around my eyes and eyelashes. It highlights your skin, darkens and thickens your eyelashes, while moisturizing them too!
  4. Rub the jelly on your skin before spritzing your perfume, and the scent will last much longer! (who woulda thought?!)
  5. Whenever I have small little baby hairs and I’m deprived of any hair spray, I take a tiny amount of vaseline and just stick those untamed pieces down
  6. Ran out of your last bit of makeup remover? No worries, vaseline’ll do the trick.

So, next time you’re in your local drug store, be sure to stock up on this multitasking beauty product!

The Best Dressed at Coachella ’15

Unless you’re living under a rock, you’re probably aware that Coachella (aka the world’s biggest music festival) took place over the past two weekends. Basically a fairytale make-believe land full of the world’s best music, the best food, the best rides, and what seems to be every-single-celebrity that exists. While my roommate was lucky enough to snag a ticket and a tent to experience the second weekend (ugh, bring me next time, @Olivia?!), I just got to experience from the sidelines, through the overwhelming celeb coverage on social. Well, there’s always next year, I guess?

Although Coachella is primarily a music festival, it’s also a time when the spring and summer trends are shown off by the world’s top supermodels, stylists, and artists for the world to see. The whole vibe is a pretty boho-chic atmosphere, and people attend dressed in some wild (and sometimes questionable) looks. Personally, a lot of the outfits (even those of my all time favs— ie. bff’s Gigi and Kendall) are not my favorite (just not my style). But, here are a few looks that I loved at Coachella ’15:

Spring Sunnies

An essential for every season, especially Spring/ Summer, is a decent pair of sunnies. Whether you only pull them out on the brightest of days, or they are practically molded to your face like Wintour; if you have one go-to pair, or like to switch it up and play around with different styles, it is no secret that they are a necessity. As for me? I would say I like to switch it up, allowing my shades to complement my outfit. Therefore, I’m always on the search for some quality, unique, and not-so-pricey sunglasses. Last spring/summer I was all about the Illesteva Leanord classics. And this year, as spring is quickly approaching, I’ve been on the look out for quality brands and styles that I’d like to get my hands (eyes) on. Here are a few designers and styles that I will be wearing once the sun starts shining a little brighter. (Click on picture to be directed to site!)

How to Actually Remove Your Makeup

Whether you want to admit it or not, every girl has the same problem. We begin to wind down after a long day or a late night, and the thought of removing our makeup seems close to impossible. Thoughts go through our heads like “It won’t make a difference if I just take it off in the morning..”, or “I don’t even have that much on.. I can just leave it.” The simple task of walking all the way to the bathroom sink and rubbing on some facial cleanser is just too much trouble for most women (as sad as that sounds). So, many revert to the oh-so-easy process of wiping a makeup removing pad across our painted faces. One easy step, and you’re done. Light’s out.

Unfortunately, its not that easy. In this case, all you’ve done is smeared the foundations and bronzers across your face even more, added a little bit more oil and bacteria, and topped it off with un-friendly chemicals from the wipes. So, as much as you don’t want to hear it, it comes down to the fact that makeup removing pads just don’t cut it for cleaning and pampering your pores. Sure, you can still use them, but it’s much more effective if you rinse your face afterwards.

What’s the alternative to this lazy-girl beauty trick? Your best (and cleanest) option is to rub an oil (coconut works) onto your skin, and then wipe it off with warm water and a (clean!) towel. Follow up and finish up with a facial cleanser, and then your face will be soft and clean as ever. Oh! And be sure not to forget to moisturize :).

Looking Tan in the Tundra

Ok, yes, I admit- I’m guilty. Guilty of the desire for that tropical glow, and that desire for 10 minutes of beaming rays during these cold and frosty winter months that seem to be never ending. Tanning beds may seem to be the answer to this issue, and while it may seem like a great idea at the time, realistically, I have come to realize, that a few days of darker skin is just not worth the detrimental effects that a tanning bed can have on your body. Recent studies have found that tanning beds account for 400,000 cases of skin cancer in the United States in ONE year alone (woah..). And not to mention the physical attributes: wrinkles, sagging skin, and sun spots (not cute!). Let’s just say, I’m over it (and you should be too!). Luckily, as more research has come out about the poor effects that UV radiation has on the body, more (and better) products have hit stores as an alternative. There are plenty of really great lotions, mousses, and sprays that you can buy at beauty or drug stores which will convince people you were vacationing in Cabo last week (ha, I wish)! Self tanner has gotten a bad rap of making one look like an orange- oompa- loompa- streaky- hot mess, but newer products actually work and give more of a natural look. After a little searching, here are my top three self tanners on the market today:

  1. Fake Bake Self Tanning Mousse, $14.35

This mousse is so easy to apply, and doesn’t leave streaks. Also, it is known to last through just about anything!

2. Shiseido Brilliant Bronze Tinted Self Tanning Gel, $30.00 This one gives a natural look with a slight shimmer and glow, and it smells great too!

3. Clarins Intense Bronze Self Tanning Tint, $32.50 This lotion creates an especially natural look, and lasts super long.

And I’ll leave you with some quick tips for lathering up like an expert

  1. Exfoliate and shave before!
  2. Be mindful of knees, hands, elbows, feet, ankles, and (especially) your face. Try using a minimal amount of lotion in these areas.
  3. Let the lotion settle in for a few minutes before putting your clothes back on
  4. Keep your skin hydrated after application! This will make it last longer.

Do your body a favor. Stop tanning and use these lotions instead. Your future self will thank you later! Xx, Tash

Drug Store Beauty Products that I Swear By

Makeup by brands like Bobbi Brown, Chanel, or Dior, while they are great, they are also breaking our bank accounts. I will be the first to admit that I am guilty of spoiling myself with the occasional trip to Sephora and spending a little too much on the latest bronzer or eyeshadow. But, I have also experimented a lot with cheaper beauty products from my local Value Drugs or Walgreens. Not only have I played around with some of these products, but I have kept going back to buy more. Why? Well, other than my (slight) obsession with makeup, I find that some of the cheaper drug store products are better than the fancy, high- priced cosmetics found in higher- end stores. Example A— I recently switched from a $40 Bobbi Brown bronzer to a $4 drug store bronzer. No joke. So, why waste all that money on expensive makeup, when you can splurge on multiple drug store products for the same price?

Anyways, here a a few of my favorite drug store beauty products that I swear by:

DIY Lip Gloss

Every girl loves a good lip gloss. In fact, most girls can’t leave the house without it. There are so many colors on the market that I, like most girls, want (and sometimes feel I need) them all. But lets be real, I’m not looking to spend my whole bank account on fifty shades of pink.

Luckily, I was watching videos on Lo Bosworth’s blog (http://thelodown.com) and came across an amazing DIY lip gloss recipe. It’s super simple, and you can create literally any shade of lip gloss you want, however much you want of it, and its just as good as store brands (but cheaper!).

All you need is Aquaphor (similar to vaseline), and any powder that is the shade you want your gloss to be (blush, eyeshadow, bronzer, you name it!). Creating your own personal lip gloss only takes one step— mixing Aquaphor with the powder of your choice. You can add as little or as much powder as you want, according to how dark or light you want your shade to be. I was astonished with how quick, easy, and cheap this beauty recipe was, and now I use it all the time.
